Prohibiting Removal of 24″ Trees in Edmonds

Since 2005, I have seen so many trees cut down for one reason or another in Edmonds. We, the long time residents love our trees and we are ok with trees growing and maybe limiting our views. In recent years, It has turned into getting more money for the sale of the home, providing views vs trees.

I am a tree hugger myself and I really love the new ordinance.

Finally, The City of Edmonds has Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP) as of July 2019. UFMP has policies and goals for retaining trees within Edmonds.

New regulations for developing properties were adopted on March 2, 2021. The tree regulation enforces a percentage of trees within 6-inch diameter to be retained when a site is developed. Additionally, replanting with development to retain more trees and establish a City Tree Fund.

Goal is no net loss of overall tree canopy.

While City Counsel will be looking at a more comprehensive plan meanwhile Emergency Oridance has been put in place for trees 24-inch diameter.

City Council passed Emergency Ordinance 4217, prohibiting the removal of trees with a 24-inch diameter on all properties!

Unless, the tree is a hazardous and removal will be reviewed with a development permit.
